Abstract:
The negative effects of ultraviolet radiation on human health are a subject gaining importance day by day. The most known and valid way of avoiding from ultraviolet rays is the protection provided by textiles. In this study the definition of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) which was harmful sun lights, the relation between UVR and textile materials and the literature information concerning the protection from ultraviolet rays through textiles and the development of ultraviolet (UV) protective properties of textiles were given. As an addition to the given literature information, experimental studies and measurements concerning the subject were made. Raw, hydrophilized, optical bleach operation was applied on 100% cotton knitted fabrics in various constructions and they were dyed in light and dark colors and UV permeability and ultraviolet protection factors of cotton knitted fabrics on which UV absorber chemical substance in various concentrations was applied were examined and the comparisons were made according to each other.
