Lykos Vadisi’nin kuzeybatısından geçen Maiandros Nehri ile vadiye adını veren Lykos Nehri’nin verimli kıldığı coğrafya, ekonomik ve stratejik bakımdan önemi ile birçok kente ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Lykos Vadisi’nin sınırlarını oluşturan, ekonomik gücü ile kentleşme bakımından gelişme ve büyüme gösteren Laodikeia, Hierapolis ve Tripolis bölgenin önemli kentleri olmuştur. Stratejik konum, topografik kazanç ve coğrafi verimlilik, Lykos Vadisi kentleri arasında kentleşme ve kentleri oluşturan mimari yapıların uygulamalarında benzerlik gösteren etkileşimlere neden olmuştur. Hellenistik Dönem’den itibaren, Laodikeia ve Hierapolis’te olduğu gibi Tripolis’te de hippodamik sistemde, eşit insulalarda ve gelişkin sokak tipi ile planlanmış olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Kamusal yapılar planlanırken insulaların düzenine uyulmuş ve yapılar ana caddeler üzerine konumlandırılmıştır. MS 1. yy. ve sonrasında bölgede sıkça gerçekleşen depremler, kentlerin sıklıkla yıkımlarla karşı karşıya kalmasına neden olmuştur. Lykos Vadisi çevresinde yer alan traverten ocaklarının varlığı sayesinde, yapılanma ve onarım çalışmalarını hızlı bir şekilde gerçekleştiren kentler, yıkımların üstesinden sıklıkla gelebilmişlerdir. Yumuşak bir yapıya sahip olan travertenin kolay işlenebilir olması ile yeni inşa faaliyetlerinde, daha az zaman ve finansal kaynak gerektiren pratik uygulamalar tercih edilmiştir. Mimari yapıların uygulamalarında birçok benzer özelliklerin görülmesi, dönemin önemli yapılarında gerçekleştirilen yeni uygulamalar, Lykos Vadisi ve çevre kentlerinde yeni akımların oluşmasına neden olmuştur.
The geography irrigated by the Maiandros flowing through the northwest of the Lykos Valley and the Lykos River, after which the valley is named, housed many important cities in addition to its strategical and economical importance. The cities of Laodikeia, Hierapolis and Tripolis set not only the boundaries of the Lykos Valley but also developed and grew with economic power and urbanisation. Strategic location, topographic gain and geographic fertility paved the way for interaction reflecting parallelism in urbanisation and implementations of architecture. It has been determined that, as at Laodikeia and Hierapolis, Tripolis was also developed on a Hippodamic system of equal sized insulae and advanced street type starting in the Hellenistic period. The public structures were designed according to the arrangement of the insulae and they were located in the main streets. Frequent earthquakes as of the first century AD put the cities face to face with destruction of immense size. Thanks to the travertine quarries in and around the Lykos Valley the cities rapidly rejuvenated. As the travertine is soft and easy to work practical implementations requiring less time and financing were preferred for the new constructions. Presence of many common properties in the architectural implementations and new implementations realised in the important structures of the period paved the way for the emergence of new currents in the cities of the Lykos Valley and environs.
